COLD SOULS Review

I love discovering movies that are not targeted to a mainstream audience, that make you think, that have original stories, and that are fascinating to watch. These are the reasons I love going to film festivals, because you discover movies you would have never seen otherwise.
That's sort of how I feel about Cold Souls. The movie tells the story of an actor, named Paul Giamatti (played by Paul Giamatti of course), who decides to literally store his soul because he can't deal with it anymore. This of course leads to some really absurd, but really funny scenes. But that's not the whole story. Something goes wrong with the storage, which leads Paul to go on a journey both physically and mentally.
Cold Souls is a character study film with a very slow pace, although not in a boring way. It is definitely not going to appeal to everyone one, but I found it to be a breath of fresh air.
COLD SOULS Movie Trailer & Pictures with Paul Giamatti

Check out the trailer for COLD SOULS starring Paul Giamatti, Dina Korzun, David Strathairn, Emily Watson, and directed by Sophie Barthes.
After posting the poster for Cold Souls a couple of days ago, we get a trailer. And now I'm really excited to see this film. I'm planning on catching it at the LA Film Fest, so hopefully I'll have lots more to talk about soon.
Cold Souls Synopsis: Paul Giamatti plays Paul Giamatti in this idiosyncratic comedy in which soul extraction is a unique form of stress relief. He soon finds out that the side effects of "soul storage" can get absurdly complicated.
Cold Souls will be released to theaters on August 7, 2009. Watch the trailer and check out more pictures below.

DUPLICITY Review

DUPLICITY (3.5 out of 5 stars)
When I went to see Duplicity over the weekend, I wasn't too excited to see it. Quite frankly I had had what I like to call "trailer fatigue," which happens when you watch the trailer for one movie so much that it gradually decreases your excitement to go see it. Yes, Clive Owen was in it as well as Julia Roberts, but even that didn't help. So it was very reluctantly that I was dragged to the movies.
But here is where things get better. When the movie starts, we get a pretty cool opening scene showing Richard Garsik (Paul Giamatti) and Howard Tully (Tom Wilkinson) each CEOs of rival companies coming at each screaming and then throwing down. Nothing too original or exciting, right? Well, just imagine it in slow motion. Every weird face expression of not only the CEOs but their entourage is caught on camera. It's really cool and puts you right in the middle of the rivalry between the two companies. In addition, it also sets up the movie perfectly right there and then.
The rest of the movie then focuses on Claire Stenwick (Julia Roberts) and Ray Koval (Clive Owen), two ex-spies who are working together to try and pull a con job. I gotta say, these two work very well together, I really loved their dynamic and I wasn't bored throughout the whole movie. It all was very entertaining and pretty clever.
Now I'm not going to tell you how it all ends, but I will say this, the end was one of my favorite part of the movie.
Overall I think Duplicity is definitely worth a look. And if not in theaters at least on DVD.

Paul Giamatti, Sacha Baron Cohen & Reese Witherspoon in DOWNSIZING Movie?

Paul Giamatti, Sacha Baron Cohen and Reese Witherspoon have committed to star in Alexander Payne's (Sideways) new movie, DOWNSIZING.
Paul Giamatti would star as a man who realizes he could have a better life if he shrinked himself. (Not sure how that's going to work.) And Reese Whitherspoon would star as a woman Giamatti's character meets along the way.
However since Alexander Payne is still working on the screenplay, so far there are no official deals.
