INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS Movie Review

Yesterday, I tucked into a comfy seat at the movies to watch the new Quentin Tarantino movie INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. So without further ado, here is my review of Inglourious Basters.
Inglourious Basterds takes place during World War II where a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds", lead by their intrepid leader Lt. Aldo Raine (played by Bradd Pitt) are on a mission to terrorize the Nazi regime by savagely attacking and scalping Nazis.
I am not going to give away too much of the rest of the plot but let me just tell you that although the movie is called Inglourious Basterds, the actual Basterds are only one part of the great ensemble cast that peppers this entire movie.
On the Basterds side, I particularly want to talk about one character, Hugo Stiglitz (Til Schweiger), a quiet German-born soldier who is recruited by Aldo to kill other Nazis. His character was just riveting as his approach of a cold blooded bastard was very well executed. Til Schweiger has a great future ahead of him.
On the nazi side, you cannot ignore Hans Landa aka "The Jew Hunter" (Christoph Waltz) who is just a perfect mix of terrifying and funny. That character would give Hannibal Lecter and any other bad guy a run for their money.
In short, you will be amazed by the great acting that Tarantino managed to get out of his actors. Absolutely genius stuff.
One thing that I have to give Tarantino props for is his willingness to kill off likeable characters very easily. Not unlike British TV shows, Tarantino movies are excellent at setting up very likeable characters for which you cannot help but root for, and then killing them off pretty brutally. Essentially, Mr Tarantino just knows how to keep it real, extra real in fact.
In addition, for all you French speakers out there, you will not be disappointed by the french spoken throughout the film. Not only were the accents authentic, but the actual dialogue felt ...French and not like some American script that is crudely translated in French.
The clearest way to define Inglourious Basterds is that it is a near perfect blend of thriller, drama, comedy and social commentary. This blend is then delivered in a very well crafted and tension filled masterpiece of a movie. Bravo, Mr Tarantino.
Definitely a must watch.

Movies Coming Out This Weekend August 21 2009
Wondering what movies are coming out to theaters this Friday, August 21 2009? Here is a list with my intentions to watch at the movies, rent, watch on TV, or skip all together.

DEFINITELY WATCH AT THE MOVIES
Fifty Dead Men Walking
I wrote about this movie recently and it looks like an interesting story. I might give it a shot in theaters.

Fifty Dead Men Walking Synopsis: Inspired by an incredible true story, "Fifty Dead Men Walking" is a sweeping and gritty thriller featuring Jim Sturgess (21, Across the Universe) in a star-making performance opposite Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley (The Wackness, Elegy). Set in Belfast in 1980 where the Irish Republican Army is waging an all-out insurgent war against the British occupation, Martin McGartland (Sturgess) is a young small-time Belfast hustler recruited by a wily British intelligence agent (Kingsley) to infiltrate the IRA. Martin quickly uses his natural instincts as a con man to get inside the IRA and starts feeding information to the British, saving hundreds of lives in the process. But with each successful mission, Martin becomes increasingly in danger of being caught and exposed. The IRA is ruthless, and once an infiltrator has been exposed he becomes a "dead man walking." As Martin becomes consumed by his double life, and his British handlers threaten to sell him out if he refuses to continue his counter-intelligence work, he is plunged into a dangerous game in which the stakes could not be higher.
Five Minutes of Heaven
I want to see this movie mainly for the actors and I am curious to find out how the story turns out.

Five Minutes of Heaven Synopsis: Two men from the same town but from different sides of the Irish political divide discover that the past is never dead--in fact it isn't even past.
Inglourious Basterds
Quentin Tarantino's latest film is a must see this weekend for me. Already bought my ticket!

Shorts
This one is for my entertainment and it might also be a good family movie to see this weekend. And the fact that Robert Rodriguez directed it is a definite plus.

Shorts Synopsis: In the suburb of Black Falls, all the houses look the same and everyone works for BLACK BOX Unlimited Worldwide Industries Incorporated, whose Mr. Black's BLACK BOX is the ultimate communication and do-it-all gadget that's sweeping the nation. Other than keeping his parents employed, however, Mr. Black's BLACK BOX has done nothing for 11-year-old Toe Thompson, who just wants to make a few friends... until a mysterious rainbow-colored rock falls from the sky, hits him in the head and changes everything. The Rainbow Rock does Mr. Black's BLACK BOX one better: it grants wishes to anyone who holds it. Before long, wishes-gone-wrong have left the neighborhood swarming with tiny spaceships, crocodile armies, giant boogers... and outrageous magical mayhem around every corner. But it's not until the grown-ups get their hands on the Rock that the trouble really starts. Now Toe and his newfound friends must join forces to save their town from itself, discovering along the way that what you wish for is not always what you want.
DEFINITELY RENT
Post Grad
If I'm being honest, Post Grad is the type of movie that I love renting because it relaxes me. I don't need to think much when I watch it, I can just relax. Although those types of movies are not all always that great, even just for entertainment purposes, so let's hope this one doesn't disappoint.

Post Grad Synopsis: Recent college graduate Ryden Malby (Gilmore Girls star Alexis Bledel) has just survived for years of higher education, but when she's forced to move back into her childhood home, the stress of dealing with her eccentric family, landing a job, and finding the right guy leaves her with precious little... time to ponder where her life is truly heading.
DEFINITELY WATCH ON TV
My One and Only
This might become a rental if I am able to get through my really long Netflix list by the time it comes out, but I doubt it. So I think I'll end up watching it on TV.

My One and Only Synopsis: A 1950s-set comedy in which the glamorous Anne Deveraux (Zellweger) embarks on a drive down the Eastern Seaboard in a quixotic search for a wealthy man to fund a new life for her and her sons.

Quentin Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS Teaser Trailer (2009)

Quentin Tarantino's new movie that everyone misspells, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (and no it's not Inglorious Bastards), finally has a teaser trailer. With all the hype around it, I was expecting some great things. And I have to say the trailer delivered. Of course I wish we saw more, but I am definitely looking forward to it.
Apart from the great cast (which includes Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Daniel Brühl, Eli Roth, Samm Levine, and B.J. Novak), Inglourious Basterds definitely looks like an interesting take on the war.
