THE FREEBIE - Sundance Movie Review

THE FREEBIE is a film about a happy married couple, Darren (Dax Shepard) and Annie (Katie Aselton), who decide to give each other one night of freedom to have no-strings-attached sex with a stranger for each of them. But this seemingly great plan might not turn out exactly how they anticipated it would.
The film was created using a lot of improv and I think it definitely contributes to the realism of the film. I found the story to be very organic and true, and that's why I enjoyed watching it so much. It was as if you were a fly on the wall listening in to this couple's secret conversations and seeing their relationship evolve. I think couples might definitely be able to relate to Darren and Annie.
In order for the movie to work, the most important part was to get two good actors to portray to a couple. I [...]

3 BACKYARDS - Sundance Movie Review

3 BACKYARDS is not a typical movie and it will not appeal to everyone, but I personally really enjoyed it.
3 Backyards takes a look at an autumn day in the life of 3 different people. The first one is a businessman (Elias Koteas), who has been having marital issues, decides to wanders around his hometown when his flight gets delayed, instead of going home to his wife and daughter. The second one is an eight-year-old girl (Rachel Resheff) who makes an unexpected encounter with an adult on her way to school when she makes a wrong turn. The third one is a housewife (Edie Falco) who goes on a bizarre trip when her neighbor, a famous movie star, asks her for a ride to the ferry.
The reason I loved 3 Backyards so much was because it's so simple and yet so real at the same time. There isn't really a [...]

BLUE VALENTINE - Sundance Movie Review

I got to see BLUE VALENTINE yesterday, and let me tell you, it was one of the best movies I have seen not only here at the Sundance Film Festival, but in general. It's like the cast and crew sat down to come up with a movie that I would love, and man did I love it.
Blue Valentine tells the story of a married couple, Cindy (Michelle Williams) and Dean (Ryan Gosling) who are struggling with their marriage, and in a last effort to reconnect got to a theme hotel. Parallel to that, we get to see the story of how they met and fell in love.
The story is simple enough and there isn't a lot going on as far as action, but we follow the characters on a huge emotional journey. This is a film about character study, and so it's hard to talk about Blue Valentine without mentioning [...]

DOUCHEBAG - Sundance Movie Review

Yesterday, I caught a screening for the movie DOUCHEBAG. This is another film for which I wasn't really sure what to expect and found it enjoyable and kind of fun.
Douchebag tells the story of Sam Nussbaum (Andrew Dickler), a guy about to get married whose fiancée (Marguerite Moreau), decides to surprise him by going to pick up his brother Tom (Ben York Jones), whom he hasn't seen in two years, so that he can come to their wedding taking place that week. Even though Sam is not too happy about Tom being around, he still takes the opportunity to go on a road trip with him to go and find Sam's only love, his fifth-grade girlfriend. But it soon becomes apparent that Sam has ulterior motives for this trip.
When the movie started, I had no idea who the title was referring to, but it very soon became clear that [...]
