AUDREY TAUTOU from Coco Before Chanel Interview

A few weeks back, I got a chance to participate in a roundtable with Audrey Tautou to talk about her latest film, COCO BEFORE CHANEL, in which she plays the iconic Coco Chanel.
She talked about how she prepared for the part, her experience working with Alessandro Nivola and Benoit Poelvoorde, whether she got to keep any of the clothes from the movie, and much more.
Coco Before Chanel comes out to theaters this Friday, September 25, 2009, but until then, enjoy the interview below.
How did you feel playing Coco Chanel as a young woman?
Audrey Tautou: I think I feel very lucky because she's maybe one of the most brilliant French women ever. She had such a unique character and extraordinary temperament that was very enriching to have the opportunity to play her and know her a bit more.
How did you prepare for the part?
Audrey Tautou: Well, I read a lot. I read some books and biographies and looked at photos and videos and of course had an idea about the main aspects of the way she was behaving, I would say, on the exterior. Also, the main aspects of her personality. I tried to find everything I could obtain about when she was very young because there was just a few information about her. I tried to guess what the aspects of her personality that she kept having, and which were the ones she lost with the success and the tragedy she lived and the one who appears with the time. It was trying to find the balance.
How is it different playing a historical character as opposed to a fictional one?
Audrey Tautou: Well, the interesting thing in this movie is that I was at the frontier between the famous Chanel and the unknown one. So I can say that the famous one, it's like the regular way of preparing for a part. You just observe the material. You observe her and you try to recreate her as close as possible from what you see. On the other side, we were showing a very unknown Chanel and so it was not a fictional character but it was a mystery. So that's how I could give my own little touch. That was very interesting for me, mixing those two elements.
COCO BEFORE CHANEL Review

I recently got a chance to see Anne Fontaine's film Coco Before Chanel, which comes out to theaters this Friday, September 25, 2009.
The film follows the life of Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel (played by Audrey Tautou) before she became the iconic Coco Chanel. We learn about the two most important men in her life, Etienne Balsan (played by Benoît Poelvoorde), a rich racehorse owner, who became her lover, and Boy Capel (played by Alessandro Nivola), the love of her life, who helped her along the way.
The problem with films based on someone's life is that sometimes they might end up boring. Let's face it, not everyone's life is interesting enough to become a movie and even if it is, the filmmaker needs to make sure they are telling a story and not just recounting events.
I think that Anne Fontaine achieved that. While Coco Before Chanel is based on a real story, the film would still work even if it wasn't because it is so well put together. In fact, Coco Before Chanel is really a love story, a tragic one, but a love story none the less.

It's a movie I'm really looking forward to, especially because Audrey Tautou is one of my favorite actress. Although I think I like the French poster (which you can see below) better than the American one.

ENSEMBLE, C'EST TOUT (Hunting and Gathering) Review

ENSEMBLE, C'EST TOUT (5 out of 5 stars)
Recently, my dad sent me the French movie, Ensemble, C'est Tout (Hunting and Gathering), for me to watch because he thought I would enjoy it, and with a cast that includes Guillaume Canet and Audrey Tautou, he was right, I loved it.
Unfortunately, the movie was not released in the US (which is quite unfortunate if you ask me), but if you're in France make sure to pick up a copy (and if you need subtitles I think Australia released the movie). But since I loved the movie so much, I wanted to share it with you.
Ensemble, C'est Tout (which is literally translated "Together, That's All"), based on the book of the same name by Anna Gavalda, tells the story of Camille (Audrey Tautou), who while a talented sketch artist, works at night as a cleaner. It seems that Camille does everything she can to disappear. She barely eats to the point that her mother even tells her that no boy will be interested in her if she looks like that.

I just love Audrey Tautou and so it's really exciting to see her in such an interesting part. And it's also pretty fun to see Alessandro Nivola especially since he's speaking French. Plus I've been a fan of his for years.
As for Benoît Poelvoorde so far I have only seen him in funny parts, so I'm curious to see him in something a little more serious.
The trailer for Coco Avant Chanel looks pretty amazing if you ask me. I cannot wait to see it. And since the trailer is in French and there are no subtitles, I translated pretty much everything that is said for you. You can find the translation at the bottom below the trailer.
Enjoy and let me know what you think. Will you go see Coco Avant Chanel when it comes out?
