THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON (4.5 out of 5)

I just got back from finally seeing The Twilight Saga: New Moon and let me tell you it was good, really good.

I do need to disclose that I am a big fan of the Twilight series and have been since even before all the craziness started. I have read all four books and enjoyed the first movie, although I thought it worked better if you had actually read the book before seeing it. However, I will admit that even though I did enjoy Twilight, I wasn't jumping up and down about it, and I understand why some people didn't really enjoy it. So when I went into New Moon, I was hoping for something better, especially because the trailer looked so great. I am happy to say that New Moon went above and beyond my hopes, and delivered a really great movie that even people who haven't read the books can enjoy. In addition, I think that fans of the book will also be very pleased with how close to the book the movie is.

For those who don't know, in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Edward leaves Bella in order to protect her from the dangers that come from dating a vampire. A heartbroken Bella then turns to Jacob for comfort and their friendship grows. As the two get closer Bella also learns about Jacob's secret, turns out he's a werewolf. Unfortunately, the return from one of the Cullens disrupts their new friendship, as Bella needs to make a difficult choice.

The story has a very good pace and the relationship between Bella and Jacob has a great build up. Even though I'm on Team Edward, while watching the movie, I found myself having a soft spot for Jacob too.
Some of the more tender moments reflected the book more closely. A lot of the lines come directly from the book, but they do not sound cheesy when said out loud, which is not that easy to do. There is also some comic relief throughout the film, which was really welcome and balanced the darker moments well.

Another great improvement over Twilight is that the visual effects are way better this time around. The pack of wolves look pretty damn amazing and scary. And the fight scenes are way more impressive. Even the sparkling of the vampires worked better.

And finally, the actors. Well, I already thought that Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were good in the first movie, and in New Moon they definitely stepped up their games. Although Robert Pattinson isn't as much in the movie as Kristen Stewart, it feels like he has a better grasp over who Edward is, which makes his scenes so much more true and interesting to watch. I can't wait to see what he does in the third movie, Eclipse.
I always thought Kristen Stewart was a great Bella, and in New Moon she is able to get to a real dark place showing us Bella's despair over Edward leaving her. I'll even admit that I had tears in my eyes at some point. I really enjoyed her performance.
And of course, Taylor Lautner, who plays Jacob, is front and center in this movie. He definitely went through a huge transformation both physically and acting-wise. I honestly wasn't sure that he could touch me the way Jacob had touched me in the book, but as I was watching scenes between Bella and Jacob, it was as if I was reading the book all over again. I am definitely impressed and looking forward to seeing more of Taylor Lautner in Eclipse.

We don't see as much of the supporting cast as these three main actors, but I do want to mention a few of them.
I was really happy to see more of Charlie, played by Billy Burke, in New Moon. Not only that, I also feel like they captured the essence of who Charlie is so much better in this one than in Twilight. He also had quite a few funny lines, which made him even more likable as a father.
The Volturi were definitely scary, but mostly I want to mention what a great Aro Michael Sheen created, he was absolutely wonderful.
We unfortunately didn't see too much of the Quileute werewolves, and I wish we had seen more of them interact together with Jacob, but overall I think it worked.
As for the Cullens, well there really isn't much to say since we barely see them in this film. But I always get a kick out of seeing Jasper (Jackson Rathbone), he's pretty hilarious.

Overall, I think that even non-Twilight obsessed people might enjoy New Moon. It feels like a totally different movie and series compared to what I had come to expect from the first one. I have to give huge props to Chris Weitz for giving New Moon such a great tone and bringing out such brilliant performances from the actors. I really hope that David Slade does as good of a job with Eclipse.

Following Bella's ill-fated 18th birthday party, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and his family abandon the town of Forks, Washington, in an effort to protect her from the dangers inherent in their world. She also faces the prospect of a potentially deadly reunion with her beloved that is a far cry from the one she'd hoped for.

DARK WOODS (2 out of 5)

Dark Woods is what I would call a dark independent psychological thriller. It follows the story of Henry (John Muscarnero) who brings his terminally ill wife, Susan (Tracy Coogan), in a cabin in the woods far from the hospital so she can die in piece. While there they have a weird encounter with an intruder which sort of leads to Henry finding and rescuing a young girl, Alicia, in the woods. The sheriff (James Russo) then convinces Henry to let Alicia stay with him and his wife for a few days until foster care can place her somewhere else. And that's when things get a little bit out of hands.

The concept for the story and trailer had me intrigued, but it just didn't live up to my expectations. To be completely honest I just couldn't get into it. The film just dragged on and I didn't understand what the point of it was. The characters are not very likeable, especially Alicia. It feels like she has a dissociative identity disorder. One minute she's nice, one minute she goes insane. I just didn't understand why Henry didn't throw her out, which actually made me want to shake him so that he would stand up for himself and his wife. But instead, Henry starts to get attracted to Alicia, while his wife is lying in bed in the other room dying.

As for the wife, Susan, well I'm still not sure what the storyline surrounding her was all about. Mostly she's just laying around hurting, but it also seemed like she had some sort of hallucinations. At some point I even wondered if it was going to turn into a supernatural movie (it didn't). And although I assume that it was set up that way to show her deteriorating health, it just didn't work.

The ending of the film has a twist, which is sort of the payoff of the story. And while it is an interesting twist, this whole movie would have worked way better as a short film. I think the impact would have been more effective that way.

Overall, it's clear that Dark Woods was not for me. That said if it sounds like the type of film you enjoy, why not give it a shot. However, if you're not into the slow, dark psychological type of movies, I would recommend you just skip it.

Los Angeles Times
Sebastian Gutierrez's entertaining and determinedly racy "Women in Trouble" has a lot going for it, despite its modest budget, little-known cast and reported 12-day shooting schedule. The title alone suggests Pedro Almodóvar, and while Gutierrez similarly can mine an extravagant multi-character soap opera plot for both outrageous hilarity and surprising depth, he is more interested in creating an irresistible entertainment that affords nine talented actresses sensational roles than in projecting a vision laced with irony in the Almodóvar manner. Read More.

Imagine Russ Meyer directing a Lifetime movie and you get an inkling of the film's high camp, though that still might not prepare you for a full 90-minute session with writer-director Sebastian Gutierrez's Victoria's Secret School of Philosophy. Read More

New York Times
To judge by the swelling bosoms spilling out of the frame, the lingerie bill for “Women in Trouble” must have been estimable. An ensemble piece that never coheres despite a clutch of appealing actresses — notably Carla Gugino and Emmanuelle Chriqui — this movie was written and directed by Sebastian Gutierrez, whose screenplay credits include “The Big Bounce” (the remake), “Gothika” and “Snakes on a Plane.” It’s a discouraging list, true, but Ms. Gugino, an interesting actress who has yet to find a big-screen career worthy of her, seemed reason alone to take the chance. (And Robyn Hitchcock did the score.) Read More

Women in Trouble Synopsis: A pregnant porn star, a couple of call girls, a scorned psychiatrist, a teenage goth, a flight attendant with a crush on a famous passenger… the troubles of this cluster of LA women couldn’t be more different, but on one crazy day feminine compassion will alter all of their lives. Devilish humor, razor-sharp scripting, and a knockout ensemble of talented actresses (including Carla Gugino, Connie Britton, and Marley Shelton) turn Trouble into pure pleasure.

Uncertainty has a brilliant set-up: After it is discovered that Kate (Lynn Collins) is pregnant, the young couple finds themselves uncertain about their future. I am certain that the film never lives up to the magical promises of the plot synopsis, and was baffled at the lack of explanation of why both stories differed so greatly. Read More

Pirate Radio will be released to theaters this Friday November 13. The movie stars Bill Nighy, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kenneth Branagh, Nick Frost, Rhys Ifans, Gemma Arterton, Emma Thompson, January Jones, Jack Davenport, and directed by Richard Curtis.

In town to introduce a preview screening of "Pirate Radio," writer-director Richard Curtis ("Love Actually") described his comedy about a boatload of renegade DJs who broadcast rock-and-roll from a ship anchored off the coast of England in the mid-1960s as only "partly true." Read More.

I remember the first time I watched a Richard Curtis film. I was 14 years old and I sat down with my grandma to watch a little film called Four Weddings and a Funeral which then went on to receive a Best Picture nod. I have always been just as interested in who made a movie as much as I was interested in the final product. Read more.

If you know me personally, or read anything I write, you know that I worship the 1960s and the music of the time. I grew up behind the seat belt of my dad’s Chevy Silverado, driving around town with the Oldies station blaring out songs about Brown Sugar tasting so good, My Guitar Gently weeping, and People Trying to put down my father’s generation. I fell in love with grinding guitars, amps that never worked quite right, and the homemade sound of just trying to be louder and more soulful than the guys who were just on stage. Read more.

Pirate Radio Synopsis: THE BOAT THAT ROCKED is an ensemble comedy, where the romance is between the young people of the 60s, and pop music. It's about a band of DJs that captivate Britain, playing the music that defines a generation and standing up to a government that, incomprehensibly, prefers jazz.

In 1966 – British pop music's finest era – the BBC played just 2 hours of rock and roll every week. But pirate radio played rock and pop from the high seas 24 hours a day. And 25 million people – over half the population of Britain – listened to the pirates every single day.

Recently expelled from school, Carl (Tom Sturridge) has been sent by his mother to find some direction in life by visiting his godfather Quentin. However, Quentin is the boss of Radio Rock, a pirate radio station in the middle of the North Sea, populated by an eclectic crew of rock 'n' roll DJs.

They are led by The Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman) - big, brash, American, god of the airwaves, and totally in love with the music. He’s faithfully backed up by his co-broadcasters Dave (Nick Frost) - ironic, intelligent and cruelly funny; Simon (Chris O’Dowd) - super-nice and searching for true love; Midnight Mark (Tom Wisdom) - enigmatic, handsome and man of few words; Wee Small Hours Bob - the late night DJ, whose hobbies are folk music and drugs; Thick Kevin (Tom Brooke) - possessor of the smallest intelligence known to mankind; On-The-Hour John (Will Adamsdale) - the newsreader; and Angus 'The Nut' Nutsford (Rhys Darby) - possibly the most annoying man in Britain.

Life on the North Sea is eventful. Simon finds the woman of his dreams and is married on the boat…only to be left by his bride the next day. Gavin (Rhys Ifans) returns from his drug tour of America to his rightful position as greatest DJ in Britain and, in doing so, clashes with the Count. And Carl discovers the opposite sex and who his real father is.

Meanwhile, pirate stations have come to the attention of government minister Dormandy (Kenneth Branagh) who is out for the blood of these lawbreakers. In an era when the stuffy corridors of power stifle anything approaching youthful exuberance, Dormandy seizes the chance to score a political goal and The Marine Broadcasting Offences Act is passed in an effort to outlaw the pirates and remove their ghastly influence from the land once and for all.

What results is a literal storm on the high seas. With Radio Rock in peril, its devoted fans rally together and stage an epic Dunkirk-style hundred boat rescue to save their DJ heroes. Some things may come to an end, but rock 'n' roll never dies.

The Messenger will be released to theaters on Friday November 13, 2009 and stars Ben Foster, Woody Harrelson, Samantha Morton, Jena Malone, Eamonn Walker, and directed by Oren Moverman. If you are planning to go see the movie, here are a few reviews from around the web to help you make up your mind.

The Washington Post
In modern warfare, which is more powerful: The IED or the NOK? That's the question posed by "The Messenger," a drama about a young army officer assigned to deliver death notices to soldiers' next of kin ("NOKs" in military parlance) while home recovering from injuries -- both physical and psychological -- that he suffered because of an Iraqi improvised explosive device. Read More.

Screen Crave
This is it, with The Messenger in theaters, the time for possible Oscar films has begun! First time director and co-writer Oren Moverman shows us how to make a movie with his debut film, which is as subtle and beautiful as it is poignant and dramatic. From an amazing script, to beautiful performances he has unknowingly made himself Oscar-bait. Read More.

The Canadian Press
It's an unenviable task, making films about the war on terror for audiences that don't want to sit through dramatizations of the same bad news they get for real out of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Less enviable is the task the key characters are charged with in "The Messenger": Providing word to people back home that a loved one has died in action.
After Kathryn Bigelow served up the first great Iraq War film with this year's "The Hurt Locker," Oren Moverman delivers a moderately engaging homefront counterpart on "The Messenger," a story that strays about without finding its centre. Read More.

The Messenger Synopsis: In his most powerful performance to date, Ben Foster stars as Will Montgomery, a U.S. Army officer who has just returned home from a tour in Iraq and is assigned to the Army’s Casualty Notification service. Partnered with fellow officer Tony Stone (Woody Harrelson) to bear the bad news to the loved ones of fallen soldiers, Will faces the challenge of completing his mission while seeking to find comfort and healing back on the home front. When he finds himself drawn to Olivia (Samantha Morton), to whom he has just delivered the news of her husband's death, Will’s emotional detachment begins to dissolve and the film reveals itself as a surprising, humorous, moving and very human portrait of grief, friendship and survival.

If you are planning to go see the movie, here are a few reviews from around the web to help you make up your mind.

Hollywood Reporter
The protagonist of Barra Grant's "Love Hurts" is an absent-minded physician more or less stuck in the '80s, and the movie suffers from a similar problem: It's a romantic comedy that takes as its model TV sitcoms from bygone days. Read more

Variety
There's a perfectly likable, sitcomish romantic comedy buried somewhere deep inside Barra Grant's indie "Love Hurts," but it would have taken some very significant rewrites to unearth it. What's left on the surface is an ungainly, at times cringe-worthy succession of tame, telegraphed romantic mishaps, well-intentioned if unconvincing sentimentality, and some of the least authentic teenage dialogue this side of the "Friday the 13th" franchise.

DVD Talk
The karaoke scene. It's become an epidemic. I've seen an inordinate amount of comedies over the last few years employ a karaoke bar as a comedic device, typically involving a fuddy-duddy character finding screechy vocal salvation at the hand of a memorable '80's hit. If there's anything that immediately signals lazy screenwriting, it's staging slapstick at a karaoke bar. "Love Hurts" features such a scene. Actually, a few of them. However, it's the least of the offenses contained within this dreadful comedy, which runs through a checklist of clichés to make it to a contractually obligated 90-minute running time. It's a long 90 minutes. Read more.

Love Hurts Synopsis: Ben Bingham has slipped into a fossilized middle-age, unlike his vibrant wife Amanda. When she finally leaves him, Ben is at a loss. He drowns himself in gin and refuses to get out of his pajamas until his popular 17 year-old son Justin takes over. He changes Ben's "look" and pushes him out into the social scene. Before Ben knows what is happening, he is the most popular single man in town, pursued by his nurse, his trainer, and karaoke-singing twins. Things change when Justin falls in love for the first time and now finds his father's lifestyle incredibly superficial. Ben is forced to refocus, recapture his humanity, his heart, and most importantly his wife... who is now with another man

Huffington Post
Perhaps Fantastic Mr. Fox will be the film that convinces adults that animation isn't just for kids.
Indeed, given the sensibility of writer-director Wes Anderson, Mr. Fox is barely a movie for kids, despite its Roald Dahl pedigree. Anderson's delicious take on life and movies may amuse youngsters -- but not as much as it will tickle adults, with its delightfully anthropomorphized forest creatures who can't quite escape their animal nature. Read more

NJ.com
“Fantastic Mr. Fox” Movie Review -- With his snug corduroy suits, encyclopedic knowledge of British Invasion B-sides and polite obsession with the eccentric and dysfunctional rich, director Wes Anderson has been a whimsical presence in American film since his 1996 debut, “Bottle Rocket.”
His new, stop-motion “Fantastic Mr. Fox” helps give whimsy, and Anderson, back their good names.

Film School Rejects
Fantastic Mr. Fox marks the first time Wes Anderson, that connoisseur of whimsy, has worked with animation. If the switch required an adjustment it’s hard to tell. From the use of slow-motion to Alexandre Desplat’s jaunty soundtrack the world of this stop-motion adaptation of Roald Dahl’s children’s classic looks and feels a lot like the offbeat ones of The Darjeeling Limited, The Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore. Read more.

The Fantastic Mr. Fox Synopsis: The stop-motion film, marking Anderson's first foray into animation, is an adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic children's story, centering on a clever fox who must outwit three mean, dimwitted farmers who try their hardest to hurt Mr. Fox and his family.

"2012," the new disaster picture from Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day," "The Day After Tomorrow"), is 160 minutes long. That's two hours and 40 minutes of Earth destruction and cardboard-cutout characters screaming in terror while they drive/fly/boat away from impending blue-screen computer-generated doom. Read More...

Say this for Roland Emmerich's latest movie: It is a disaster.
Granted, for maybe an hour of its running time, 2012 is a reasonably kinetic catastrophe. Anyone who's seen the director's previous pictures (Godzilla, Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow) has to have known that he and his army of digitizers would arrange for the world to end not with a whimper but with a particularly showy bang. Read More

Director Roland Emmerich doesn’t do small. In “Independence Day,” he blew up the White House. In “Godzilla,” he unleashed a monster lizard on New York. For his latest epic “2012″ (and epic it is; the run time is nearly three hours), he forecasts the end of the world. Read More

Because the early screening of Precious came with a warning from the publicist to bring tissues, I fully expected to be a goner. Yet there I sat dry-eyed through all of Lee Daniels' screen adaptation of Sapphire's celebrated 1997 novel Push. The movie has the kind of authenticity and ugly immediacy that make the tears of a viewer sitting in the dark safety of a movie theater seem a little silly — indulgent even. Read More

Part of the magic of movies is their ability to take you places you otherwise couldn't - or wouldn't - take yourself.
Wall Street Journal
Just a few weeks ago, "Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire," looked to be this year’s requisite heartwarming movie story. The elements were all there: a difficult subject that made financing almost impossible (until a millionaire guardian angel stepped in!); an unknown star whose virtuoso performance is garnering Oscar buzz; celebrity backing by no less than Oprah Winfrey; lots of gushing stories in the mainstream media. Read More

For almost 90-percent of it's runtime Precious is so bleak and downright desperate you wouldn't need to explain yourself if you told me you didn't want to see it. However, should you go against what your instincts are telling you, you will end up seeing an eternally hopeful film that is hands-down the best drama I have seen in 2009 so far. Read More

Precious Synopsis: Lee Daniels's PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL "PUSH" BY SAPPHIRE is a vibrant, honest and resoundingly hopeful film about the human capacity to grow and overcome.
Set in Harlem in 1987, it is the story of Claireece "Precious" Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life no one would want. She's pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother (Mo'Nique), a poisonously angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically. School is a place of chaos, and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and an awful secret: she can neither read nor write.
Precious may sometimes be down, but she is never out. Beneath her impassive expression is a watchful, curious young woman with an inchoate but unshakeable sense that other possibilities exist for her. Threatened with expulsion, Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school, Each One/Teach One. Precious doesn't know the meaning of "alternative," but her instincts tell her this is the chance she has been waiting for. In the literacy workshop taught by the patient yet firm Ms. Rain (Paula Patton), Precious begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination.

Precious is in theaters now. Watch the trailer below.

Our country is currently enmeshed in two wars that enjoy something less than unanimous support among the populace. Politically, we’re divided, with symbols of authority like the military held in only medium esteem by many. Given that, it’s sort of shocking that the new comedy film "The Men Who Stare at Goats," about a truly wacky experimental U.S. military unit, should exist in a vacuum, removed from current events and the tension they’ve created. Read More

A legion of "Warrior Monks" with unparalleled psychic powers can read the enemy's thoughts, pass through solid walls and even kill a goat simply by staring at it. When the programme's founder, Bill Django (Oscar® nominee Jeff Bridges), goes missing, Cassady's mission is to find him in this quirky dark comedy, inspired by a real story.

You've heard about close encounters of the third kind, of course, the extraterrestrial meetings that involve contact, presumably of a benign nature. I love alien movies. Really, it's the only genre that can still scare me. I'm not saying that other spooky things don't give me pause or make me jump.
The Fourth Kind Synopsis: In 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. This encounter has been the most difficult to document ... until now.
Structured unlike any film before it, The Fourth Kind is a provocative thriller set in modern-day Nome, Alaska, where—mysteriously since the 1960s—a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered.
Here in this remote region, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented.
Using never-before-seen archival footage that is integrated into the film, The Fourth Kind exposes the terrified revelations of multiple witnesses. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film.

It will be starring the voices of Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn, and directed by Robert Zemeckis. If you are planning to go see the movie, here are a few reviews from around the web to help you make up your mind.

Cinematical Review
The fear many of us had when it was announced Jim Carrey would play Ebenezer Scrooge and other parts in Robert Zemeckis' adaptation of A Christmas Carol was that Carrey's clowning would turn the story into a goofy farce. This fear turns out to have been unfounded. If anything, the opposite is true: The film has no personality at all, not Carrey's or anyone else's. Read More

TELEGRAPH.CO.UK Review
Deck the halls with boughs of computer-generated holly, for Disney are in bright and early with their seasonal extravaganza, and the good news -- of which there is some -- is that A Christmas Carol keeps the slush at bay with a reasonable dose of salt. Read More

RopeofSilicon.com Review
One thing's for certain with Robert Zemeckis's latest attempt at motion-capture CGI animation, kids need not apply. I have had conversations with fellow critics and the conclusion I've come to concerning children and Disney's A Christmas Carol is that while some elements may indeed frighten some kids, the overall complaint will be that it's just too boring. Read More

A Christmas Carol has also made Daemon's Movies list of the Top 10 Christmas Movies of 2009.
MOTHERHOOD (2 out of 5 stars)

I recently got a chance to attend a screening for Motherhood which depicts the day of a mother, Eliza (Uma Thurman) as she tries to get ready for her daughter's party while also trying to find a way to balance her own life.

When I went into the movie, I was expecting to watch a fun, enjoyable movie about the tribulations of being a mother, but instead the movie left me thinking about three things 1) I'm so glad I don't have kids, 2) I'm not sure I want to have kids now, 3) if I do end up getting kids, Lord help me from becoming like Eliza.

Now, I'm not saying that motherhood is easy, but it was really hard to relate to Eliza because she was just overwhelmed all the time and it didn't really feel that it was coming from her being a mother, but more because of her character flaws.

Her husband (Anthony Edwards) was pretty absent throughout the film and came off as a real tool, except in the last scene of the film, which in my eyes was not enough to redeem him.

The only character that I actually enjoyed was Eliza's friend Sheila (Minnie Driver). Although she's not a major character, I had fun watching her scenes.

The story was centered on Eliza trying to get through the day and getting everything ready for the party as more and more things get in her way, including a film shoot in front of her building, which moves her parked car a few blocks away forcing her to go do her all her shopping on a bike. A lot of the scenes made me cringe, I found myself wanting to shake Eliza in order for her to get a grip.

And of course, in the midst of all this, Eliza is also a mom blogger. She usually tries to find any small amount of time she can to write and of course on that specific day she decides to enter a contest ran by a parenting magazine. All she needs to do is write a 500 words answer to the question, "What Does Motherhood Mean to Me?" So in addition to everything else she has to do, Eliza needs to find time for that as well, which actually wasn't a part that bothered me. I found myself rooting for her to get it done.

Even though, I understand that the point of the movie was to show how hard motherhood is but that it is also rewarding, I just wish that Eliza had been a stronger character and someone that mothers can look up to or that can inspire you.

I usually enjoy this type of movie, but I just couldn't get into this one. So if you're thinking of watching Motherhood, I would recommend you wait to seen it on TV (or even a rental if you really can't wait).

Title: MOTHERHOOD
Director: Katherine Dieckmann
Cast: Uma Thurman, Anthony Edwards, and Minnie Driver
Synopsis: Eliza Welch (Thurman) is a former fiction writer-turned-mom-blogger with her own site, "The Bjorn Identity." Putting her deeper creative ambitions on hold to raise her two children, Eliza lives and works in two rent-stabilized apartments in a walk-up tenement building smack in the middle of an otherwise upscale Greenwich Village. Eliza's good-natured but absent-minded husband (Edwards) seems tuned out to his wife's conflicts, not to mention basic domestic reality, while her best friend Sheila (Minnie Driver) understands this – and Eliza -- all too well.
MOTHERHOOD takes place in a single day that pushes to the tipping point Eliza's fundamental fear she's lost herself. Starting at dawn, her to-do list is daunting: prepare for and throw her daughter's 6th birthday party, mind her toddler son, battle for a parking space during an epic alternate side parking showdown, navigate playground politics with overbearing moms, and mend a rift with after posting her best friend's confession on her blog. On top of it all, Eliza decides to enter a contest run by an upscale parenting magazine. All she has to do is write 500 words answering the deceptively simple question, "What Does Motherhood Mean to Me?"
In the process of trying by nightfall to put these thoughts into words that don't "sound like bad ad copy," Eliza rediscovers her own voice and realizes what is truly valuable in her life. At once hilarious and poignant, MOTHERHOOD looks at the challenges facing mothers everywhere with a keen eye to every slight to a nearly-middle-aged woman's selfhood – from being called "M'am" by condescending twentysomethings to endlessly stooping to pick up toys and a spouse's dropped socks.

ONG BAK 2 (1.5 stars out of 5)

A little while back, I was invited to an advance screening of Ong Bak 2 and, being a fan of Ong Bak, I was very excited to see Tony Jaa do his thing again.

Ong Bak 2 is marketed as a prequel to Ong Bak although it really has nothing to do with it. The story revolves around Tien (Tony Jaa) who, as a teen, saw his parents being slain by a political rival. Through some adventures, he ends up in this gang of thieves who teach him the different martial arts that will serve him to prepare for his ultimate revenge.

Needless to say, my expectations were modestly high. The plot had a lot of things going for it but unfortunately, my expectations were not met. Let me tell you why by breaking out the good and bad parts of this movie:

The Good Parts of Ong Bak 2

The fight scenes are certainly dope. In Ong Bak 2,Tony Jaa goes beyond the classic Muy Thai moves and explores different disciplines and fighting techniques. The whole movie is essentially a set up to fight scenes where we see Tony do some crazy stuff. In this movie, you will have the answers to the following questions:

- Can Tony Jaa fight a crocodile?
- Can Tony Jaa fight with weapons?
- Can Tony Jaa fight a gazillion enemies at the same time?
- Can Tony Jaa fight a gazillion enemies at the same time AND use an elephant to do so?

The answer is yes across the board.

During these fight scenes, there is some really cool camera work and editiing that only enhance them. So overall, great scenes.

Now the question is: What else was good in this movie? Well, the answer is not much else.

The Bad Parts of Ong Bak 2

The bad parts of the movie can be summed up in two words: Everything Else.

The story was so badly put together that my 5 year old niece could have done a better job of writing it. There were major plot holes that just were too glaring to ignore and yet they found a way to ignore them. The feeble attempt of introducing some sort of love story was so exceptionally bad that it was better if they didn't try.

The acting was painfully awful. Even the subtitles could not hide how bad the characters were portrayed. Tony Jaa was the worst of them all. The character he portrays spends almost the first 25 mn of the movie saying exactly NOTHING. Jeez.

Now, the end was the worst part. There was none. It litterally ended on a freaking cliffhanger. When the light came on, people were expecting more. One guy was like: "Is that really it?"

Basically, aside from the fight scenes, this is one of the worst movies I have seen all year. I suggest you do the following: Save your money, wait for this to come out on DVD, rent it and fast forward throughout the movie until you see the fight scenes. That will be a much more pleasant experience than sitting through the entire movie.

NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU (4 out of 5 stars)

A while back I got a chance to attend a screening for New York, I Love You, which was released to theaters today, October 16, 2009.

New York, I Love You is a collection of short films that all take place in New York and involve some sort of love story. It's the second episode in the "Cities of Love" series of collective feature films from producer Emmanuel Benbihy, following Paris, Je t'aime.

There are a total of 10 short films directed by Jian Wen, Mira Nair, Shunji Iwai, Yvan Attal, Brett Ratner, Allen Hughes, Shekhar Kapur, Natalie Portman, Faith Akin, Joshua Marston, and 11th director Randy Balsmeyer was in charge of all the transitional scenes.

Some of the cast includes Bradley Cooper, Justin Bartha, Andy Garcia, Hayden Christensen, Rachel Bilson, Natalie Portman, Irrfan Khan, Emilie Ohana, Orlando Bloom, Christina Ricci, Maggie Q, Ethan Hawke, Anton Yelchin, James Caan, Olivia Thirlby, Blake Lively, Drea De Matteo, Julie Christie, John Hurt, Shia LaBeouf, Ugur Yucel, Taylor Geare, Carlos Acosta, Jacinda Barrett, Shu Qi, Burt Young, Chris Cooper, Robin Wright Penn, Eva Amurri, Eli Wallach, and Cloris Leachman.

I ended up liking New York, I Love You even more than Paris, Je t'aime. The stories were all really interesting and the actors were great.

I had two favorite segments. First, my all time favorite was Shekhar Kapur's segment on the Upper East Side starring Julie Christie and Shia LaBeouf. It was written by the late Anthony Minghella, who was also supposed to direct it but unfortunately passed away before he was able to. It is a really beautiful and touching story, and Shia LeBeouf will blow you away. This is definitely one of my favorite performance of his.

The other really great one is Yvan Attal's segment in Soho starring Ethan Hawke and Maggie Q. It was so simple but so funny and great, I actually want to watch it again. And Ethan Hawke manages to shine in the small amount of time he has. Probably one of his best scenes ever.

A few other segments worth mentioning were:

Brett Ratner's segment in Central Park starring James Caan, Anton Yelchin and Olivia Thirlby, which is pretty memorable. You definitely won't see the end coming.

Allen Hughes' segment in Greenwich Village with Drea De Matteo and Bradley Cooper had a really interesting feel, and I liked the way it was put together.

And finally, Joshua Marston's segment at Brighton Beach with Cloris Leachman and Eli Wallach was very sweet. I think it'll put a smile on your face and is a great way to end the film.

The rest of the segments were also all pretty good, but these are the ones that stood out to me.

Another part that I really enjoyed about New York, I Love You is that they tie in all the stories together by using another character, a New York videographer (played by Emilie Ohana), who interacts with the other characters throughout the movie, which gives it a whole new dimension.

Overall, if you enjoyed "Paris, Je t'aime," or are a fan of the city of New York, or like short films, you'll most likely enjoy New York, I Love You. And even if you don't fit into any of these categories, I would give it a chance anyway, it might surprise you.

ZOMBIELAND (4 out of 5 stars)

I got a chance to see Zombieland a few days before it hit theaters today, October 2, and let me start by saying that I absolutely loved it.

Now I am not a fan of horror movies, and zombie movies are not my thing either, but Zombieland is not really what I would call a horror film. The zombie part has more of a Shaun of the Dead flavor to it, which I actually enjoy. Within the first ten minutes I was pretty much sold on the film and could tell I was going to have a great time. So I thought I would break the movie down and tell you about what which parts I enjoyed the most. But before that let's start with:

What is Zombieland all about?

Zombieland takes place in a world that is overrun by zombies, except that these zombies are not undead, but infected people that now like to eat flesh.. how nice. We meet Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) a kind of a wuss character, who has been able to survive so far by sticking with his set of rules. He meets Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) a pretty badass zombie-killer, with whom he ends up traveling. Along the way, they also meet sisters Witchita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), who are trying to get to Pacific Playland.

Now that you know what the movie is all about, let's find out what makes it good.

Columbus' Rules

The best part of the film and what made it so much fun to watch was learning about Columbus' rules and then applying them throughout the movie. Some of these rules include "Cardio," which turns out is really important if you're going to outrun zombies, so you better hit the gym! "Double Tap" which means that you shouldn't be stingy with your bullets and that once you've shot a zombie once, you should shoot him a second time (in the head preferably) to make sure he is dead. Turns out you should also "stay away from bathrooms" because zombies can feel when you are at your weakest. There are of course a few more rules that you will discover throughout the film but this gives you a taste.

But rules themselves are not the only great thing, it's also how they are used throughout the movie. Every time the characters are in a situation in which they use or don't use the rules, you get a visual reminder of the rule written on the screen, which was my favorite thing in the movie. So for example as Columbus is outrunning zombies, you'll see the word "Cardio" blinking in the corner, it's pretty hilarious. Plus it made the rules that much more relevant and the whole thing a whole lot funnier.

Columbus

Even though the character of Columbus is set up to be this kind of geek/wuss guy, I found him very endearing and loved the fact that he was able to out-survive almost everyone.

Tallahassee

Tallahassee is a really great character in the film, and come on it's Woody Harrelson too! He is quite the opposite from Columbus, which makes a pretty interesting dynamic.

Twinkies

Throughout the whole movie, Tallahassee is trying to get his hands on a twinkie so that he can have one before they all go bad. And let's just say that he is very passionate about finding his twinkie.

I personally have never had a twinkie in my life (I know shocker, it just never looked really good to me), but seeing him so obsessed with them almost makes me want to try one now so I can find out what the fuss is all about.

A Great Cameo

While I don't want to spoil it for you (because I had no idea when going into the movie myself), there is a pretty great cameo in the film, which creates some great comedic moments, but doesn't turn out exactly the way you expect. So I'll just leave it at that...

It's funny!

And finally, Zombieland is just a funny and entertaining movie to check out during the weekend. No, it doesn't have any profound message, but who cares. I had a great time watching it, it was one of my favorite movies that I have seen lately, and I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Warner Bros has recently released GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST on Blu-ray, DVD, On Demand & Digital Download (you can buy it on Amazon).

I got a chance to take a look at the Blu-ray version, which also includes a digital copy of the film.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is a retelling of a Christmas Carol with a twist. It tells the story of Connor Meade a perpetual bachelor, who gets visited by three ghosts (the ghosts of girlfriends past, present and future), who take him on a trip to examine his past failed relationships.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is the typical romantic comedy in which Connor has to realize that love exists and is embodied by his childhood friend Jenny Perroti.

I personally enjoy romantic comedies even when they have tons of cliches, but the real question is, is this movie a good romantic comedy? I would say it was average. I wasn't jumping up and down about it, but I enjoyed it.

The main reason I enjoyed it was because of Matthew McConaughey, who plays a really great Connor Meade. This is of course key since he is the main character. I enjoyed the rest of the cast as well, but not as much as Matthew McConaughey. What can I say, he is charming. So ladies, if you like him, this movie is for you.

I saw the movie in Blu-ray, which of course looks nice and sharper, but to be honest I don't think it's as important to see a movie like that on Blu-ray compared to an action movie. But still, it's always nice to watch a film in higher quality. Plus you also get the special features in HD.

Special Features

And speaking of special features, there are a few you can enjoy with the Blu-ray.

There are three behind-the-scenes type featurettes which are The Legends, The Lessons and the Ladies, It's All About Connor, Recreating The Past, Imagining the Future. You will get to hear the cast and crew talk about making the films, what it is like working with Matthew McConaughey, and much more.

The special features also include some deleted scenes, which is sometimes fun to check out, especially if you enjoyed the movie.

Overall, if you are in the mood for some romance and a fun movie to watch, you should check Ghosts of Girlfriends Past out.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past Synopsis
"Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" stars Matthew McConaughey as perpetual bachelor Connor Mead. On the eve of his brother Paul's wedding, Connor's mockery of romance proves a real buzz-kill for Paul and the wedding party, including Connor's childhood friend Jenny Perroti (Jennifer Garner), the one woman who has always seemed immune to his considerable charm. Just when it looks like he may single-handedly ruin the celebration, Connor is visited by the ghosts of his jilted girlfriends, who take him on a revealing and hilarious odyssey through his failed relationships. Together they attempt to find out what turned him into such a player and whether he has a second chance to find—and this time keep—the love of his life.
