The trailer for Sandra Bullock’s latest movie, ALL ABOUT STEVE, has just been released.

This is the typical romantic comedy, and I will admit that I usually enjoy one here and there… Ok I like them a lot, but I mostly rent them, which I feel is what’s going to happen with All About Steve. Plus it’s coming out on March 6th, which is Watchmen’s release date and we all know Watchmen beats all.

So while I can’t really recommend watching this at the movies, I would suggest you checking out the trailer and making up your own mind.

The rest of the cast of All About Steve includes Bradley Cooper and Thomas Haden Church.

The next movie from the Sundance Film Festival 2009 that we will take a look at is TOE TO TOE.

While I don’t recognize many of the actors, I am interested in the story. It looks like a simple meaningful story and I curious to see more about it.

Synopsis: At a politically correct prep school in Washington DC two girls -one black, one white- go toe to toe. Jesse is a privileged but troubled white girl whose slutty tendencies pull her towards self-destructive behavior. Tosha is a fiercely determined African-American from Anacostia, one of DC’s most impoverished areas. Both new seniors and star players on their school’s lacrosse team, the two girls click despite their differences. Their fledgling friendship begins to falter when they discover their shared interest in Rashid, a dashing Lebanese homeboy. Things unravel further when Tosha and Jesse have a shoving match on the lacrosse field and racist graffiti appears on Tosha’s locker soon after. Jesse is expelled from school and spirals deeper into self-destructive behavior. Surprisingly, it is Tosha who comes to her rescue. Jesse then returns the favor by sacrificing her own well being for that of Tosha’s. And so the two girls, once mired in mutual hatred, become each other’s salvation.

DEFINITELY WATCH AT THE MOVIES

Bride Wars

While I have seen the trailer so many times that I am tired of it, I do think Bride Wars could be a fun movie to check out for some entertainment after a long week.

Synopsis: Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) are best friends who since childhood have planned every detail of their respective weddings. At the top of their bridal “must have” list: a ceremony at New York’s ultimate bridal destination, the Plaza Hotel.
Now, at age 26, they’re both about to get married, they’re about to realize their dreams; and they’re about to live happily ever after.
Or maybe not…
When a clerical error causes a clash in wedding dates - they’re now to be married on the same date! - Liv, Emma and their lifelong friendship are put to the ultimate test. Liv, a successful lawyer who is used to getting what she wants, including the perfect job and the perfect man, won’t settle for anything less than the perfect wedding she has dreaming of for years. Emma, a schoolteacher who has always been good at taking care of others, but not so much in looking after herself, discovers her inner Bridezilla and comes out swinging when her own dream wedding is imperiled.
Now, the two best friends who’d do anything for each other, find themselves in a no-holds-barred, take no-prisoners struggle that threatens to erupt into all-out war.

Gran Torino (Nationwide)

Gran Torino is expending nationwide, and since I have heard good things about it, I’m going to say it’s a must watch at the movies.

Synopsis: Walt Kowalski is a widower, grumpy, tough-minded, borderline-hateful, unhappy old man who can’t get along with either his kids or his neighbors, a Korean War veteran whose prize possession is a 1973 Gran Torino he keeps in cherry condition. When his neighbor Tao, a young Hmong teenager, tries to steal his Gran Torino, Kowalski sets out to reform the youth. Drawn against his will into the life of Tao’s family, Kowalski is soon taking steps to protect them form the gangs that foul their neighborhood.

DEFINITELY RENT

Possession

The first time I heard about Possession it was about a year ago when I saw the trailer for the time. And although it doesn’t seem like the best movie I’ll ever see, the cast has gotten me intrigued. With Sarah Michelle Gellar and Lee Pace involved, I’ll definitely rent this one when it comes out.

Synopsis: A woman’s husband collides with his brother in a freak car accident, landing both of them into comas. Complications arise when the brother wakes and believes that he is the woman’s husband.

The Reader

This might be a little too depressing for me to watch at the movies, but since it is Kate Winslet, I do want to eventually watch it.

Synopsis: The Reader opens in post-WWII Germany when teenager Michael Berg becomes ill and is helped home by Hanna, a stranger twice his age. Michael recovers from scarlet fever and seeks out Hanna to thank her. The two are quickly drawn into a passionate but secretive affair.

Michael discovers that Hanna loves being read to and their physical relationship deepens. Hanna is enthralled as Michael reads to her from “The Odyssey”, “Huck Finn”, and “The Lady with the Little Dog.” Despite their intense bond, Hanna mysteriously disappears one day and Michael is left confused and heartbroken.

Eight years later, while Michael is a law student observing the Nazi war crime trials, he is stunned to find Hanna back in his life – this time as a defendant in the courtroom. As Hanna’s past is revealed, Michael uncovers a deep secret that will impact both of their lives. The Reader is a haunting story about truth and reconciliation, about how one generation comes to terms with the crimes of another.

DEFINITELY WATCH ON TV

Not Easily Broken

This doesn’t really look like a movie that I would enjoy that much, but I think it might be worth a look when it’s on TV, at least you can change the channel if you don’t get into it.

Synopsis: Dave and Clarice Johnson are in their second decade of marriage. Dave’s dreams of major league baseball success were dashed by an injury in college, leading him to a steady but unfulfilling career as the head of a small construction firm. Clarice is basking in the glow of real estate stardom, creating a life that revolves around her rise to the top. She has become blind to Dave’s needs, the most important being his desire to become a father and start a family with her. They face a total disruption in their lives when a car crash seriously injures Clarice, whose meddling mother, Mary, blames Dave for her daughter’s leg injuries and derailed career. Help comes in the form of kind-hearted physical therapist and single mom Julie Sawyer, whose son Bryson is coached by Dave and his pals Brock and Tree in Little League baseball. Though Clarice is helped by Julie’s care, she becomes concerned that her constant criticism of Dave has pushed her husband away–possibly into the arms of the empathetic Julie. Soon Dave and Clarice must face a married couple’s most serious questions: are we really meant to be together, and if we are, how do we fight to keep what we have built as man and wife?

HELL WILL FREEZE FIRST

The Unborn

Did I mention I hate horror films, so I might not be the best person to guide you for this one, but The Unborn is a definite Hell Will Freeze first for me.

Synopsis: Casey Beldon hated her mother for leaving her as a child. But when inexplicable things start to happen, Casey begins to understand why she left. Plagued by merciless dreams and a tortured ghost that haunts her waking hours, she must turn to the only spiritual advisor, Sendak, who can make it stop. With Sendak’s help, Casey uncovers the source of a family curse dating back to Nazi Germany–a creature with the ability to inhabit anyone or anything that is getting stronger with each possession. With the curse unleashed, her only chance at survival is to shut a doorway from beyond our world that has been pried open by someone who was never born.

Synopsis: Ride high on the Pineapple Express, the outrageously hysterical blockbuster from Judd Apatow, the director and screenwriter of Knocked Up. A lazy stoner (Seth Rogen) is the sole witness to a murder by an evil drug lord (Gary Cole) and the corrupt cop (Rosie Perez). Marked for death, he runs for his life, dragging his dazed dealer (James Franco) and his supplier (Danny McBride) with him on a hilarious smokin’ adventure.

Recommendations: It’s a comedy and it’s actually funny. Turns out Pineapple Express was way better than what I thought it would be and I wouldn’t mind watching it over again.

Babylon A.D.

Synopsis: It is the not-too-distant future. Thousands of satellites scan, observe and monitor our every move. It is a world made for hardened warriors, one of whom, a mercenary known only as Toorop, lives by a simple survivor’s code: kill or be killed. His latest assignment has him smuggling a young woman named Aurora from a convent in Kazakhstan to New York City. Toorop, his new young charge Aurora and Aurora’s guardian Sister Rebeka embark on a 6,000 mile journey that takes them from Eastern Europe, through a refugee camp in “New Russia,” across the Bering Straight in a pilfered submarine, then through the frozen tundra of Alaska and Canada, and finally to New York. Recommendations: I did hear bad things about the movie, but since I haven’t actually seen it yet, I’m curious, hence the must rent recommendation.

Bangkok Dangerous

Synopsis: The life of Joe, an anonymous assassin, takes an unexpected turn when he travels to Thailand to complete a series of contract killings. Joe, a remorseless hitman, is in Bangkok to execute four enemies of a ruthless crime boss named Surat. He hires Kong, a street punk and pickpocket, to run errands for him with the intention of covering his tracks by killing him at the end of the assignment. Strangely, Joe, the ultimate lone wolf, finds himself mentoring the young man instead whilst simultaneously being drawn into a tentative romance with a local shop girl. As he falls further under the sway of Bangkok’s intoxicating beauty, Joe begins to question his isolated existence and let down his guard–just as Surat decides it’s time to clean house. Recommendations: I feel the same way about Bangkok Dangerous that I feel about Babylon A.D. Haven’t heard great things about it, but still want to see it. What can I say, I’m an entertainment whore.

The Wackness

Synopsis: Set in New York in the sweltering summer of 1994, THE WACKNESS tells the story of a troubled teenage drug dealer, who trades pot for therapy sessions with a drug-addled psychiatrist.. Things get more complicated when the kid falls for one of his classmates, who just happens to be the doctor’s daughter.

Set against the backdrop of the greatest year in hip hop history, THE WACKNESS is a coming-of-age
story about sex, drugs, music–and what it takes to be a man.

Disaster Movie

Righteous Kill

Synopsis: A pair of veteran New York City police detectives are on the trail of a vigilante serial killer. After 30 years as partners in the pressure cooker environment of the NYPD, highly decorated Detectives David Fisk and Thomas Cowan should be ready for retirement, but aren’t. Before they can hang up their badges, they are called in to investigate the murder of a notorious pimp, which appears to have ties to a case they solved years before. Like the original murder, the victim is a suspected criminal whose body is found accompanied by a four line poem justifying the killing. When additional crimes take place, it becomes clear the detectives are looking for a serial killer, one who targets criminals that have fallen through the cracks of the judicial system. His mission is to do what the cops can’t do on their own–take the culprits off the streets for good. The fourth movie from the Sundance Film Festival 2009 that we will take a look at is TAKING CHANCES.

Make sure to keep an eye out for that one because not only does it star Kevin Bacon, but it’s an HBO film, which usually means high quality. The film is based on true events and I really love the feel of the trailer.

Synopsis: Based on real-life events, Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, a volunteer military escort officer, accompanies the body of 19-year-old Marine Chance Phelps back to his hometown of Dubois, Wyoming.

So the teaser trailer for CRANK 2: HIGH VOLTAGE was just released and I have to ask myself, are they frakking kidding me?!!

This is one of the worst trailers I have ever seen. I mean I was expecting something bad (seeing how I didn’t like Crank at all), but this goes beyond how bad I thought number 2 would be.

It looks so bad I almost want to go see it to believe it. Seriously, is anybody going to see this? (Apart from guys who will see it for the naked girls, because let’s face it that’s the only reason they are in the movie.)

Oh and don’t even get me started on how the hell is Chev Chelios still alive…

I really like Jason Statham, and it really pains me to see him in this, but obviously hell will freeze first before I watch it. Number one was enough for me.

So what’s the story for Crank 2: High Voltage? Well, a Chinese mobster has replaced Chev Chelios’ heart with a battery-powered one that requires regular jolts of electricity to keep it “working.” Now Chev Chelios has to go around Los Angeles in pursuit of the Chinese mobster who stole his heart.

DEFINITELY WATCH AT THE MOVIES

DEFIANCE (Limited)

I have been waiting for this one for a while now. It’s not very cheery for the new year, but I think it’s definitely worth seeing. The great cast includes Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell, George MacKay, and Mark Feuerstein.

Synopsis: Defiance is about three jewish brothers who join Russian resistance fighters to fight the Nazis and rescue fellow Jews.

GOOD (Limited release in NY/LA)

Another movie that is not very cheery for the new year (what is up with all the Holocost movies for New Year?), but it’s Viggo Mortensen in what looks like an amazing performance. And Jason Isaacs seals the deal for me (I just love him).

Synopsis: A literary professor and decent family man, John Halder (Mortensen) explores his personal circumstances in a novel advocating compassionate euthanasia. When the book is unexpectedly enlisted by powerful political figures in support of government propaganda, Halder finds his career rising in an optimistic current of nationalism and prosperity. Seemingly inconsequential decisions lead to choices, which lead to more choices…with eventually devastating effect.

The third movie from the Sundance Film Festival 2009 that we will take a look at is DARE.

Definitely a movie I am interested in checking out. I mean come on, Zach Gilford from Friday Night Lights and Emmy Rossum, I kind of have to.

Plus the last picture below makes it seem like there is a dark side to the story. I for one am interested to find out all about the secrets.

Synopsis: Three very different teenagers discover that, even in the safe world of a suburban prep school, no one is who she or he appears to be.

Towelhead

Synopsis: Jasira, a 13-year-old Arab-American girl, navigates the confusing and frightening path of adolescence and her own sexual awakening. Worse, her budding womanhood makes her traditional and hot-tempered father uncomfortable. Recommendations: I hadn’t heard much about this film, but with Alan Ball directing and writing the script, I have put Towelhead at the top of my netflix list.

Surfer Dude

Synopsis: Longboarding soul-surfer Steve Addington (Matthew McConaughey) returns to Malibu for the summer to find his cool hometown vibe corrupted. New sponsorship demands Addington to expand into Virtual Reality Video Games and Reality TV. Unwilling to participate in this new digital-reality, he chooses to spend his summer surfing his home break. But in a twist-of-fate, the waves go flat and stay flat. Out of money, his expense-accounts canceled, and betrayed by his buddies, Addington is backed into a harsh corner. He must endure the insanity that comes with no waves or give into “the Man” and his new, reality-altering machines.

Aided by his manager (Woody Harrelson), his mentor (Scott Glenn), his guardian-angel (Willie Nelson) and his summer lover (Alexie Gilmore), Addington has a chance of keeping his cool, but it’s not going to be easy. The dude needs a wave, and there’s never been a drought like this.

Recommendations: The trailer only was enough for me to know that this is not worth even renting. I don’t even remember this being in theaters. Too bad because I really like Matthew McConaughey.

Check out another movie trailer for HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE. It has been out for a while, but chances are some of you missed it. Plus there is always a good reason to rewatch it one more time.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince comes out to theaters on July 17, 2009.

While it doesn’t look like the most original, I think it has potential. Although I’ll be honest, it looks more like a rental for me than actually going to see at the movies.

Fun Fact: For Twilight fans, you might recognize Justin Chon in the trailer who played Eric.

Synopsis: Crossing Over is a multi-character canvas about immigrants of different nationalities struggling to achieve legal status in Los Angeles. The film deals with the border, document fraud, the asylum and green card process, work-site enforcement, naturalization, the office of counter terrorism and the clash of cultures. Crossing Over comes out to theaters on February 27, 2009.

Since Christmas is upon us, we thought it was a great time for a giveaway, but this time we’re doing things differently.

Usually our giveaways are restricted to residents of the US, but since we know that not all of our readers live in the US, we thought we would give them a chance to win something for once.

So here is the deal, we are giving away one copy of BIG FISH on DVD to residents of Canada and Europe only (yes that means this time we are excluding people residing in the US).

The trailer for the movie adaptation of Paulo Coelho’s book VERONIKA DECIDES TO DIE starring Sarah Michelle Gellar has just been released.

I read the book years ago (I think more than 10 years ago) and LOVED it. I’m not sure how well this will be translated into a movie, but I am definitely excited to find out.

If you haven’t read the book, I definitely recommend your grab yourself a copy of Veronika Decides to Die before watching the movie (although of course if you would rather not get spoiled before watching the movie, then you shouldn’t read the book).

Veronika Decides to Die will be released in March 2009. Let me know what you think of the trailer.

Synopsis: The story centers on Veronika, a woman in her mid twenties who appears to have everything: good looks, good job and a great life ahead of her. Yet she decides to end her own life. She is unsuccessful and awakens in a mental hospital where she learns that she has five days to live. We learn that the reason that she attempted suicide was that she felt so constrained by the rules and expectations of ‘normal’ society that she had concluded that she had experienced all that life had to offer. However in the hospital she meets people who are only ‘insane’ because they don’t always follow society’s rules. With little left to lose, Veronika embarks on a journey on which she frees herself to experience relationships and emotions and ultimately discovers what it means to live.

The second movie from the Sundance Film Festival 2009 that we will take a look at is ARLEN FABER.

I will admit that I am a big fan of Jeff Daniels, and so having him in a movie will automatically spike up my interest. That said I also have to like the trailer or the story in order for me to actually want to go and see the movie.

The cast of Arlen Faber looks very strong and it sounds like an independent movie that would be right up my alley. I am really looking to a trailer for this one.

Fans of Gilmore Girls might also be excited to see Lauren Graham on the big screen.

I personally have added Arlen Faber as a movie to look out for and so should you. I have a good feeling about this one. Only time will tell if I was right.

Recommendations: This movie is great, just look at the cast, and it’s hilarious. Definitely a movie you’re going to want to watch over and over again.

Eagle Eye

Synopsis: A young slacker and a single mom get tangled up in a terrorist cell plotting a political assassination. (Source: imdb.com)

Cast: Shia LaBeouf, Michelle Monaghan, Rosario Dawson, Billy Bob Thornton, Eric Christian Olsen, Ethan Embry, and William Sadler

Recommendations: Definitely entertaining and a fun rental. Plus if you like Shia LaBeouf, you’ll definitely enjoy it.

Death Race

Synopsis: Ex-con Jensen Ames (Statham) is forced by the warden of a notorious prison (Allen) to compete in our post-industrial world’s most popular sport: a car race in which inmates must brutalize and kill one another on the road to victory. (Source: imdb.com)

Cast: Jason Statham, Ian McShane, Tyrese Gibson, Joan Allen, Robin Shou, Jacob Vargas, Natalie Martinez, and Janaya Stephens

Recommendations: Why not? This looks entertaining and with Jason Statham, I think we can expect some pretty cool action sequences.

Ghost Town

Synopsis: In the romantic comedy “Ghost Town,” Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais), is a man whose people skills leave much to be desired. When Pincus dies unexpectedly, but is miraculously revived after seven minutes, he wakes up to discover that he now has the annoying ability to see ghosts. Even worse, they all want something from him, particularly Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear) who pesters him into breaking up the impending marriage of his widow Gwen (Téa Leoni). That puts Pincus squarely in the middle of a triangle with spirited result.

Cast: Ricky Gervais, Bill Campbell, Téa Leoni, Kristen Wiig, and Greg Kinnear

Recommendations: This looks like a fun comedy, and with Ricky Gervais, you’re in for a great two-hours of entertainment.

The Duchess

Synopsis: A chronicle of the life of 18th century aristocrat Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, who was reviled for her extravagant political and personal life. (Source: imdb.com)

Cast: Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, Dominic Cooper, Hayley Atwell, Mercy Fiennes Tiffin

Recommendations: Not necessarily my cup of tea, but Keira Knightley is a good actress and I think this movie might be enjoyable.

Hamlet 2

Recommendations: This didn’t look funny at all to me. I even had a hard time watching the trailer, so I cannot recommend you watch it.
