NOWHERE BOY – Sundance Movie Review

NOWHERE BOY is probably one of the best biopic you will ever see. It follows the life of John Lennon (Aaron Johnson) as he grows up in Liverpool in 1955 being raised by his aunt Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas) and his late uncle. John is rebellious, and when he decides to seek out his estranged mother, Julia (Anne-Marie Duff), he increases the conflict between him and his aunt. However, Johns soon forms a strong attachment to his mother, who encourages him to pursue his interest in music. John also now finds the need to revisit his painful past finding refuge in music leading him on a journey that will give birth to The Beatles.
Nowhere Boy was most definitely one of the best movies I saw at Sundance. It had some of the best acting, story, pace and just overall feel. You will not be bored one second. The characters are all well defined and compelling to watch.
Newcomer Aaron Johnson is phenomenal and the next breakthrough star for this year (especially since he’s also going to star in Kick-Ass later this year). He is so unbelievably good as a young John Lennon trying to find his purpose in life and dealing with his abandonment issues. Aaron Johnson has embodied the character fully and he will capture you ever single moment he is on screen.
Kristin Scott Thomas blows this one out of the water once again and brings Mimi to life like no one else could. Her relationship with John is so beautifully portrayed, it is one of the best things from the film, and you’ll feel like you’re it seeing for real. Kristin Scott Thomas is also able to find a good balance between her character’s apparent coldness and how she really feels inside, especially her feelings towards John.
Anne-Marie Duff plays Julia, John’s mother and Mimi’s sister, and even though I had never seen her in anything before, I am a new fan. Anne-Marie Duff creates such a loveable character in Julia, who just made bad decisions in her life and often finds herself over her head and tries to make amends. Her relationship with John will warm your heart. Julia is also the opposite of Mimi and their dynamic creates a lot of captivating scenes.
Director Sam Taylor Wood has crafted quite an amazing film that feels so real, it’s like you were watching the events unfold in front of your eyes. If you thought you knew about John Lennon, this will give you a new look into his early years and how he came to be the John Lennon we know from The Beatles.
Overall, this is a must-see movie and I’ll go as far as saying that this is probably one of the best movies that you will see this year. There is no doubt in my mind that Nowhere Boy will be an award contender this year and you will be blown away by how good it is.
