UP IN THE AIR Movie Review

UP IN THE AIR

Up in the Air will be released to theaters on December 4, 2009 (limited) and December 25, 2009 (nationwide). The movie stars George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, Jason Bateman, Melanie Lynskey, Danny McBride, Tamala Jones, Chris Lowell, and directed by Jason Reitman. If you are planning to go see the movie, here are a few reviews from around the web to help you make up your mind.

Seattle Post Intelligencer
Writer/director Jason Reitman began adapting Walter Kirn’s novel Up in the Air in 2002 and intended for it to be his first feature film. He ended up setting it aside in favor of Thank You for Smoking and Juno, but the delay turned out to be something of a happy accident. As the movie centers around a man whose job it is to go from company to company and tell employees of those companies that they have been laid off, the movie is much more relevant in 2009 than it would have been in 2002.

Screen Crave
Jason Reitman once again tackles comedy and drama with his latest film entitled, Up in the Air. The film stars Oscar winner George Clooney and features Twilight co-star Anna Kendrick as his naive young sidekick. Up in the Air is a refreshing look at a career driven man and his inability to connect with those around him. The film offers a humorous yet relevant take on how technology effects people’s ability to have healthy, normal relationships.

Huffington Post
On the surface, Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air is another variation of an oft-told tale, that of a workaholic who must learn to stop and reevaluate what he really wants from life and why he’s really so driven in his chosen career. But the picture has two things going for it. First of all, it ends up being just a little bit deeper than that, going beneath the surface level moralizing of ‘everyone should want a spouse and 2.5 kids and a dog.’ Second of all, even if we concede that it tells a relatively unoriginal story, this is an awfully good variation on said template. It’s sharply written and superbly acted, so there is much to appreciate and enjoy even if we acknowledge that its wisdom is not entirely groundbreaking.

Up in the Air Synopsis: Ryan Bingham (Clooney) is a corporate downsizing expert whose cherished life on the road is threatened just as he is on the cusp of reaching ten million frequent flyer miles and just after he’s met the frequent-traveler woman of his dreams.
