WATCHMEN: Eric's Review (2009)

This is not going to be your usual movie review as I am not really going to talk about what I thought of Watchmen but mostly what my girlfriend thought.
Here is the thing about my girlfriend (Let's call her Mandy). She is not a big fan of comic books so she doesn't know much about them. So when she saw the trailer of Watchmen, I was really surprised to see how excited she was to watch the movie. While this was a really cool trailer, I thought it didn't quite convey the complexity and depth of the Watchmen story. I was concerned that she was really expecting something that wasn't going to happen.
There's another thing you need to know about Mandy. If you tell her that something is great, she usually finds it OK but if you tell her that something is OK, there is a chance she will find it great. Lowering expectations is the name of the game with her. If you want her to dig something, you need to make it sound average.
So there began Operation "Lowering Mandy's Expectations".
There is nothing I did not do to achieve my mission:
- I banned her from reading the comic book claiming that it was kind of boring. (which of course it is not)
- I told her that the trailer didn't look that great (which of course it did)
- I told her that there was too much hype on the movie (which of course there wasn't since it is like the most "awesomest" movie ever.....Yes I know "awesomest" is not a real word but it's my post so suck it)
I spent a whole lot of time doing a variation of the above all the way up to Saturday night when we finally went to see Watchmen.
So after all these tribulations, what did she think of Watchmen?
Well she loved it. She loved the whole thing: The story that was masterfully put together on screen by Zach Snyder, the great acting and dialogue driven by a talented cast and the ridiculously cool special effects. Hooray for conniving!
So was I right to deceive her? Maybe. All I know is that she actually liked Watchmen so much that she wants to see it again. So I don't really feel bad about that.
So Mandy, if you are reading this, know that I did this for your own good and that I will never deceive you again.
Unless there is another movie that I think will be the "awesomest" movie ever.
